PlayStation 4 continues to evolve into one of the best selling consoles in history. Sony announced in a statement on Thursday that its platform has surpassed the 70 million mark sold, more precisely reaching 70.6 million.
More than showing that the console has sold colossal amounts in the past four years, the number shows that there are no signs of slowing down. In June of this year, Sony had announced the overrun of the 60 million units sold, so that there were 10 million consoles sold in that space of 6 months.
The company also released a number of interesting numbers on the ecosystem PlayStation:
- More than 617.8 million physical and digital copies of PS4 games;
- More than 2 million units sold from PlayStation VR;
- 150 games already released for the PlayStation VR, with more than 12.2 million copies sold
And the competition?
It is difficult to compare the numbers of the PlayStation with that of the competition. In the case of Xbox One, Microsoft has stopped selling the platform for some time, but it is estimated that the number is orbiting the 30 million consoles sold, according to VGChartz.
The Switch has had a very promising start, but because it’s a new platform, its numbers are still considerably far from the competition. The most recent numbers released by Nintendo at the end of October pointed to 7.63 million consoles sold; more recently, on Thursday, 7, information has emerged that 2.5 million units have already been sold in Japan alone, while the PS4 in four years accumulates 5.5 million consoles sold in the territory.
Switch numbers indicate that the console may begin to put pressure on Sony’s sluggish lead on the market. Nintendo expects to reach 14 million consoles sold within a year after the release, which would make the Switch in just one year become more successful than the Wii U throughout its life.
