Nintendo Switch overcame sales of Wii U predecessor in less than a year

The Nintendo Switch needed less than a year to exceed the sales of the Wii U predecessor. According to the Japanese manufacturer’s balance sheet for the last quarter of 2017, 14.86 million hybrid consoles have already been sold worldwide.

The Wii U, launched in 2012, sold 13.56 million units by 2017, when it was officially discontinued. The switch needed 10 months to get past that brand – it was released in March 2017 and outperformed the predecessor sometime in December.

In all, Nintendo sold 7.23 million units of the Switch between October and December 2017. The excellent sales can be attributed mainly to the success of “Super Mario Odyssey”, which sold 9.06 million units in the period. Almost two in three Switch owners have already bought the latest plumber’s latest adventure, which is the best-selling game of the console release.
